The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy, a girl who wishes to escape her mundane life, is swept away with her dog Toto, by a natural disaster. She emerges in a new unfamiliar land and is told that the only person capable of helping her return home is a wizard named Oz found in the emerald city, by following a yellow brick road. Along the way, she meets new friends – a scarecrow, a tinman, and a lion – who join her to also meet the wizard for help. However, the wizards one condition for helping is for her to bring him the broom of the wicked witch of the west, who is already intent on hurting Dorothy.
My approach to The Wizard of Oz as a Buddhist folktale, specifically from the Indian subcontinent. Buddhist iconography is often depicted with rich vibrant colours and storytelling, and connections are made between the human body, mind, and soul, and the physical space we occupy, in both the spiritual and material worlds. The script will be set in present rural day northern India, and Dorothy and all other characters will be depicted as being of Indian heritage.
